James Hempsall, OBE

Our Sustainable Strategy

Abstract

The sector is at a crucial stage in its journey. This session will discuss how we collaborate, communicate and co-construct to secure a sustainable future. It will consider where we are now, how we secure sustainable futures, identify individual and collective actions, introduce the concept of being sustainable individuals and creating a future we want and need.

How This Connects to the Sustainability Theme

Sustainability is a buzz word. With overuse, there is a risk we lose its meaning. It means different things in different contexts. This session will consider sustainability in all its guises with an emphasis on how we work together to build a sustainable future.

Biography

James Hempsall is an influential figure in the UK children’s sector, having made significant contributions to early years and childcare services. After working as an early years and childcare practitioner, manager, and development worker, he founded Hempsall’s in 1999, a leading consultancy and training organisation.

Hempsall’s collaborates with various organisations, including local authorities, central governments, and as the lead delivery team in national Childcare Works policy implementation programmes.  The organisation drives positive change and promotes best practice, with a focus on tackling inequality and addressing the effects of disadvantage through high quality early years and childcare provision.

In 2023, Hempsall’s joined forces with the Coram Group, becoming Coram Hempsall’s. This integration aims to amplify their impact on early years and childcare services. Both entities share a commitment to finding practical solutions for sector challenges and improving outcomes for families. As part of the Coram Group, Hempsall’s will continue its mission to create better opportunities for children and families.

James’ dedication to childcare earned him an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2015. His professional journey reflects a tireless pursuit of positive transformation in early education and childcare, and his expertise and collaboration with Coram and others promises to continue to shape the landscape for the better.
